Christmas is a great opportunity for pranksters to spread phony messages

As Christmas is approaching, crooks and scam artists will rely on old tricks to attract the attention of Internet users and more precisely, social media customers. The old Christmas Tree App Virus hoax was again seen circulating on Facebook and the social networking website issued a warning to remind everyone that it’s nothing but a hoax.

Users who are presented with the warning that a “Christmas tree virus” is circulating on Facebook should ignore it to avoid causing unnecessary panic.

As Graham Cluley pointed out last year, there is no such thing as a Christmas virus, or at least not any more. The only Christmas virus that was real was circulating back in 1987, attacking computers after it displayed a picture of a tree created only from ASCII characters.

Internauts are advised to avoid the hoax and make sure not to spread the rumor as being true.
