Social networking sites are gaining pace these days, and the competition in the area is increasing accordingly. Among various social media destinations, Facebook and Yahoo are detaching from rivals and are steadily taking over the social web, shows recently unveiled data from comScore, a leader in digital analytics and intelligence, according to Mashable.

Both Facebook and Yahoo managed to capture more and more traffic throughout the last year and in the beginning of 2010. Moreover, the two social networking sites are reportedly grabbing the highest volume of social web traffic, the data from comScore unveils. Beside these social media destinations, Twitter is registering massive growth, especially in the mainstream segment. The number of visitors accessing Twitter increased fivefold over the year.

When it comes to the amount of traffic each of the social networking sites accounts for, Facebook is in the lead, with 41 percent of all traffic among popular destinations as of March 2010. 24 percent of this traffic went to MySpace, pushing it to the second position, while Gmail went to the third with 15 percent of the traffic, followed by Twitter with 8 percent.

When compared to the same period of the previous year, the unique visitors charts show that a wide range of users are migrating from MySpace to Facebook. Last year, MySpace was on the first place, accounting for 39 percent of all social media traffic, with Facebook on the second position with 33 percent of traffic on its side.

During the past 12 months, the traffic on MySpace remained the same, compared to other similar destinations, which registered growth. Gmail, for example, registered slow and steady yearly growth, while LinkedIn and Twitter enjoyed exponential gains, though Facebook remains a leader here as well, with impressive growth and high traffic volumes.

The charts published on Mashable show the changes in social media traffic between March 2009 and March 2010, and a quick look at them will provide more details on the difference between the amount of traffic various online destinations enjoyed in the time frame.
