The hands are the mirror into one’s soul, it has often been said. Not the eyes, as we previously believed, hold the key to how someone truly is, but their hands and, in this sense, it is essential that women have a perfect manicure. Beauticians and celebrities are again setting the trends for the spring of 2009, and boldness and individuality are two of the attributes that predominate in terms of fingernails.

Painting one’s fingernails one shade or another is, in the end, entirely dependent on the impression one is trying to send off. Whitewashes, for instance, are ideal for an ethereal, princess-like appearance, while various delicious shades of gold can hint at the exotic, the remote, but ultimately hot. Luckily, beauticians say, the upcoming season will see both these trends making a splashing comeback.

Just like we saw last year, this spring too (and probably this summer as well), gothic fingernails will be a major hit. Short, squared and black nails will be just the thing to express a certain sense of rebelliousness and eternal youthfulness, while also being extremely trendy and, why not, practical. A manicure like this requires little maintenance, which makes it ideal on a daily basis, since a woman’s greatest ordeal, that of breaking a nail doing house chores or at work, is eliminated from the very start. Of course, it also leaves plenty of room for creativity, for all dark shades (dark brown, indigo, or plum violet) are perfect substitutes for black.

Opaque, delicate nude shades (beige in particular) and fiery reds will also be a hit this spring. So, if we’re looking for a more professional or a vampish look, respectively, these two trends are worthy of our consideration, beauticians hold, as they are guaranteed to make any ordinary hand look positively fabulous, one way or the other.

With all this, the first step towards getting enviable, awesome-looking nails remains taking good care of them before the paint goes on. A fine file will guarantee that nails don’t peel and break, as opposed to what a rough, sandpaper-like one will do. Special nail treatments (both for the nails and the cuticles) are also a must for a fabulous manicure, as also is some extra coating applied after the polish, which is meant to guarantee the paint doesn’t become chipped.
