Fable Legends, the upcoming multiplayer installment in the long-running role-playing series from Lionhead Studios and Microsoft, will be free-to-play, and the companies promise to deliver an open game that's fair and generous with players, instead of pushing microtransactions and other such things.

The Fable series has been around for quite some time and developer Lionhead has certainly experimented with the franchise, delivering not just proper RPGs but also smaller experiences with Fable Heroes, or Kinect-based ones like Fable: The Journey.

Now, the studio is working on another experiment, in the form of Fable Legends, which is a multiplayer experience that allows players to become heroes and villains and go on various adventures in the virtual world of Albion.

Fable Legends is free-to-play

After having confirmed last month that Fable Legends is the first cross-platform game that would appear on both PC and Xbox One and allow fans to interact with one another through the Windows 10 operating system, Lionhead now announces on the official website that the game will be free-to-play.

However, seeing as how there are many different free experiences out there that overwhelm players with microtransactions and other such things, Lionhead quickly emphasizes that Fable Legends will be an open game that can be completed without spending real-world money.

What's more, the developer also mentions that all gameplay-affecting items can be earned by simply playing the game, and pledges that lots of updates with new quests and mechanics will be released to all players, no matter if they pay or not.

There will be two types of currency and free heroes

Fable Legends will allow players to earn silver while playing the game but those who want to spend real money can earn gold. All sorts of things can be bought with the two currencies, from heroes to creatures and traps for the villains. Of course, customization items consisting of outfits, face variations, and more will also be available for purchase.

The game will have a free hero rotation every week, similar to that in League of Legends or Heroes of the Storm, and progression with each character will be recorded.
