Fable 4 Will Amaze Gamers, Creator Promises

Fable III is coming soon to the PC

Flamboyant games designer Peter Molyneux has once again discussed his Fable franchise, and how he hopes that the next step in the series will amaze gamers with both narrative and technological quality.

Molyneux and his team at Lionhead have been working on the Fable franchise since its inception, managing to implement a wide array of things in the role-playing series.

Now, as the third game was already launched on the Xbox 360 and is finally getting ready to debut on the PC, Molyneux looked back on his creation and admitted that it probably didn't end up as he expected at the start of development.

"I totally blame myself, not anyone upstairs, who all did a wonderful job," he said to CVG. "[After Fable 2's reception] my expectations were sky high. The planning was the problem. We had to look at the process. I think we took Fable 3 and realized it wasn't quite up-to-date with [the best modern games] and that we need to go forward. But the great thing about Fable is there's nothing quite like it out there."

Molyneux emphasizes that Fable attracts through its quirky adventures, ideas and world, not just through nitty-gritty action and technical achievements like first-person shooters do.

When asked about the next installment in the series, Molyneux avoided outright confirming that Fable 4 is in development, but admitted that he wants it to amaze people with quality.

"I have a very clear idea where Fable will go in the future. Trying to be diplomatic, I think that whatever we do next with Fable, we should just amaze people with the quality. If we go on, we're not just going to make another Fable, we're going to make something that stands head and shoulders up with anybody else out there - the best of the best - in terms of its technology, its drama and its storytelling."

Bear in mind that this isn't a confirmation just yet and don't forget that Molyneux promised a lot of great things before the release of Fable III, which received mixed response after its Xbox 360 release.

Hopefully for the big number of Fable fans, he and the Lionhead team can redeem themselves with the PC version of the game, set to appear on May 17.

I don't blame Peter for things he messed up on but I would say that Fable was a success already and he didn't follow that succes instead he went on ahead and made a totally new Fable that we aren't used to which was Fable 2, Fable 3 is a really great upgrade from Fable 2 but it still doesn't have the success that Fable 1 had, I want Peter to look back at why Fable 1 was more of a success than the sequels, I want him to make another Fable like Fable 1.

Comment #1.1 by: bestfableplayerever on 19 May 2011, 17:41 GMT

he should do it over lol jk no a prequel in the old old kingdom before his mother and jack of blades

Comment #1.2 by: Skilful wilful on 30 May 2011, 21:16 GMT

Fable 1 and 3 were rubbish fable 2 was by far the best

MAKE A PREQUEL TO FABLE 1

Comment #2.1 by: FableFan on 04 May 2011, 00:31 GMT

A prequel at some point would be WONDERFUL~ No lie :)
But i think in order to have a prequel to a story the core story must be over, which clearly isnt the case for Fable just yet.

Comment #2.2 by: kriegan on 10 May 2011, 02:40 GMT

Uh, you don't need a story to be completed in order for a prequel to be made.

When movie scripts are written, some screenwriters tend to start right in the middle, then go to the beginning and then end the story. So doing Fable 1, 2, 3, then a prequel, and then a Fable 4 would be fine.

I'd rather they reboot the series because Fable 2 and Fable 3 do not compare to Fable: Lost Chapters.

Comment #2.3 by: JohnnyBoy on 06 Jun 2011, 16:58 GMT

It'd be just like the Starwars series

Comment #3 by: TheRealHeroOfFable on 30 Mar 2011, 02:25 UTC reply to this comment

I doubt posting this will make a difference but I just have to say that Peter is awesome for making Fable 1 and The Lost Chapters but * UP with the other 2. They were fun games to play individually but compared to Fable 1 were completely horrible. Fable 1 had a great story and characters. Scythe and Jack of Blades were the best and they are completely absent in 2 and 3, only a few small references are made to them. Instead Peter decides to move into the future and become more modern. Earth to Peter...HELL * NO! I don't want Fable to turn into some modern Call of Duty piece of * , I like the fantasy, magic, swords, axes, bows! They are slowly getting rid of all of that with each new game! What time period is Fable 4 going to be in? World War 1? What * good Is that going to do?! If the Fable franchised is going to be saved and returned to its former glory, some drastic changes need to be made. Perhaps a prequel about the Old Kingdom and The Court and Scythe/William Black. Or, there can be a new game but it must NOT take place much further into the future or that will just be hell. Scythe needs to come back, there has to be some sort of good threat. At this point I don't mind Jack of Blades coming back, I would love it as a matter of fact. Scythe could help the hero prepare for Jack's return and their needs to be more heros like in the Heroes Guild. We can't have any more lame, random * villians like * Lucien or the ever-so deadly Crawler! I just needed to get this out, thank you.

World War 1? lol hilarious, i've been laughing all day!

Comment #3.2 by: Torvald=) on 13 May 2011, 23:25 GMT

I do have to agree aLITTLE but, but I did love 2 and 3. They had there own fun elements to them. A prequal would be a perfect way to create the feel of Fable 1. Many people(like myself) would be very willing to wait upto 3 or 4 years for a very very long, good grafic, interesting game.

Comment #3.3 by: unknown on 23 Jun 2011, 21:11 GMT

Fable 2 and 3 were garbage compared to number one

Comment #3.4 by: Yuuup on 05 Jul 2011, 09:19 GMT

I agree 100% with you man. Fable 1 was by far the best, followed by a pretty good sequel but fable 3 was terrible!! One of the reasons why i love fable is because its supposed to be in medieval times....but all this modernized crap is killing it!

Comment #3.5 by: CR11 on 06 Dec 2011, 22:55 GMT

you are absolutely correct

PREQUEL!

Comment #4.1 by: mittsy1995 on 06 Apr 2011, 20:56 GMT

I agree Fable 1 was awesome and a Prequel is a great idea. Fable 2 and 3 make references to the Old Kingdom but I want to know what was the "Old Kingdom". They need to make a prequel of the original Fable that shows the history. Showing the begining of the Heroes Guild and Scythe would really make a 4th installment in the series unique.

Comment #4.2 by: flying kid on 03 Jun 2011, 23:02 GMT

everything was to close together make game more dramatic what I loved about fable 2 was sad going story make people feel sad, happy all emotions and plus fable 3 s voice actings terrible

Make the next game longer damit

Comment #5.1 by: ravenofpoe on 15 Jun 2011, 08:04 GMT

anyone else ever get the feeling that the heros just keep getting weaker as the games go on? the hero of oakvale was a bad * the second hero was strong but seemed under powered. the third hero i just couldnt take him seriously. when they make the prequel or fourth game they need to give a proper spell list and a proper assortment of weapons even if like in the first you end up only using a couple of them. the options make the hero feel strong. also pls bring back lots of armor and customizable clothing and such. again it adds to the experience. also pls except that you cant make people feel attached to characters that recieve little screen time and that while the relationship system is cool it really is limited.

take the game back to fable and the lost chapters. i felt lost in a world that was fun! but a suggestion make it an open world... no zones.

Comment #7 by: Torvald=) on 13 May 2011, 23:18 UTC reply to this comment

Does anyone have an idea or hope for what the next game, or games should be based on? Although continueing in the created world of Albion; Does anyone else think it would be awesome to start from the very beginging? The Ancient Kingdom, The Archon, The First Spire? Hmmm? Wouldnt it be cool to get to experience some of the history behind the story? I think soo and so do many in my huge Fable fan club. . .

Comment #7.1 by: emerld on 18 Jul 2011, 17:27 GMT

I am in agreement with this idea,i loved the fable games reguardless of how weak or how modernized ,blah ,blah, every game has a tendacy to be different, you win some ,you lose some ,but i enjoyed the quality of the game, beautiful scenery, all in all 1,2,3 were all good in there own way ,but we need more info on the history of the old kingdom ,,the spire and hopefully they will make a 4th and make it somewhat like the 1st

Comment #8 by: Will The Thrill on 15 May 2011, 12:38 UTC reply to this comment

I have played and beat all three Fable games. I think I am the only person on Earth who loves Fable III. I have played through it trying to get all the Legendary Weapons probably 6-7 times. Sometimes as an evil character sometimes as a good one. I have enjoyed it every time! I also just got the DLCs and have almost got all the achievments done for them. I love the way the weapons change and morph and I love how you can upgrade them. I love the functionality of the map in the sanctuary and I love that you can spell weave. I enjoyed the political ramifications of being king. The only thing that sucked was the melee combat was very clumsy. I know I am very much in the minority here, but I love Fable III!

Comment #8.1 by: Moby on 06 Jun 2011, 17:04 GMT

I COMPLETELY agree with you, mate

Comment #8.2 by: Kalypso on 14 Jun 2011, 12:59 GMT

Nah, you aren't the only one that loves Fable III. I personally love Fable III more than any of the rest of them. I think that you should have been able to make more rulings in the castle throne room but it was NOT a bad game and I did enjoy playing it for probably atleast 60 hours. I have played all of them as well. Love the series, keep it up. No it isn't exactly elder scrolls but it isn't SUPPOSED to be! It's supposed to be Fable lol.

We need a new KotoR, Fable 4 could give us just that!!

Comment #10 by: bestfableplayerever on 19 May 2011, 17:39 UTC reply to this comment

i think the game should be brought back to before jack of blades. bring back the wide veriety of will powers such as multi strike beserk multi arrow etc. and better armor make it to wear you can be anything a clown warrior archer mage thief as well as add additional elegant attire girl or boy my wife and children love that also bring back a more indepth mythical story-line about your mother "the slayer of balverines" in the first one or about the bloodline and her parents because having more characters such as twinblade, thunder, maze to fight in the game is awesome no upgradable weapons the shits lame and every town needs to have more culture like in the third but more snow and more aroura possibally an new or lost continent

Comment #11 by: Mr E on 20 May 2011, 14:49 UTC reply to this comment

Well at least he has the guts to change the games drasticly every sequel even if it doesnt always turn out so good. At least it isnt like COD which copies the same game over and over again. Hopefully though, this next one will turn out better

Comment #12 by: poo on 21 May 2011, 14:54 UTC reply to this comment

I would like to see a lineage of characters. What I mean is, the player creates his/her character and it starts earlier on in the history of Albion (or a different land if needed). What the character does and how he/she becomes has an effect on the world AND his/her descendant. Depending on who the player chooses to be the other parent for the child also plays a role. Skip forward a few decades or a century and the player has a new character based on what came before; keep doing this until the story is set in the present (whatever the present is in the game world). That's what I mean by lineage. Also, so much customisation that I could have a heart attack would be nice. And of course, not * DLC like the dye packs. Black should be a standard colour.

Comment #12.1 by: Einherjar420 on 24 May 2011, 18:50 GMT

Good idea. One problem though; black isn't a colour. However, it should still be part of the game and not just Downloadable Content.

I loved the first Fable, was denied the 2nd (no xbox, just PC gaming), and finally got the 3rd.

As it stands, I'm enjoying the game - when I can play it... and it's not for a lack of time, but rather because Windows Live is terrible.

There are a few things about 3 I can't stand - the inability to choose your own expressions, lack of a visible inventory (-/= and [/] do not an inventory make), and mandatory co-op play* (Mistpeak Demon Door). There are things I really like about it - cut scene kills, truly open world, lots of 'hidden' features and mini-games.

Of all the aspects of the Fable series, the one with the most potential: family.

Consider - unnamed hero-to-be leaves spouse and child(ren) at home to go adventuring and adventures badly, let's say fatally.

No "Game Over", no knockout - it now falls on the next generation (those mini-yous you've been planting all over Albion) to find out what happened and pick up the quest where the fallen hero-to-be left off, hopefully with more luck.

Comment #13.1 by: The true DCKing on 30 May 2011, 01:31 GMT

The thing i hated most was the fact you had no real control over what your weapon would evolve into. I keep getting the treasure handle over and over so one time i just didn't dig up any thing and ignored all chest and i still got it. What they need to do is as you do stuff you unlock ways for your weapon to lock and then you get to chose from what you have unlocked.

As for the time fable 4 should be set in (if they make one) it should fill in the fall of the Hero's Guild between number 1 and number 2 because they never really explained that and there was just like this huge jump(plus it would be cool to go through that and meet Syth (or what ever his name is) and Theresa and all that.
P.S: Bring back Bows and Arrows!!! Guns and Crossbows SUCK!!!!!!!!!!

fable 3 was amazing,it would be a shame if they screwed it up because people were "unsure at first" look at how many people are in love with the game after their friends suggested, lended, passed it along, these guys need to look up how big the fandom is after 3,it is infact huge!just look up logan or reaver on deviant art for example, the look up fable 2 and 3 those 2 have huge fandoms AFTER their release,it was more of people had to try it,and get the thumbs up from others before trying it themselves,it killed in my opinion[in an awesome way],i hope fable 4 is like a better fable 3 personally, because it was an amazing game.read this "flaboyant" creator person mentioned in the article.

I loved Fable 3. I loved being King and I loved getting the Dragonstomper .48. I loved the Business and Real Estate system as well. I hope they keep the Monarch element going.

First time I played fable (tlc) I was like, Wow! Ever since then I've been a diehard lionhead follower fable 2 was released I was totally hyped like oh my god, was slightly disappointed, but mainly bit picking, what no bows, less spells, no guile and they changed the balverines, was like hmm okay, really ended up loving it, fable 3 nearly no spells story was okay, but I just didn't like it too much, at all. The wings are cool, but no horns :( or halo story was okay I guess, all in all fable 1 and2 where awesome fable 3 was meh. I just hope Peter doesn't go into the future, if he does that again what is it, our hero gets a promotion? Fable 4 would be good, maybe before the Heros guild or the story leading to the fall of the hero's guild would be naice :)

I really enjoyed fable 3 the whole idea of industrialization if they keep it in the same era but just expande on the gameplay of fable 1 and 2 with a longer story and make it so you can completely lose yourself in the game and make it completely unique to yourself then they will have an award winning game cant wait for a fourth installment to the fable farnchise enjoyed all three so far

Comment #20 by: Blackmonday on 02 Jun 2011, 21:29 UTC reply to this comment

How about another dark age of Albion? happens sooooo much in the history? gives an excuse for a mix of bows, cross bows and guns? and they can't really continue "going Modern" or the game will fail

Hes done this with every game, slate the old one, praise the upcoming one.

I enjoyed all the games, but none of them has really lived up to all his hype.

They need to make the stories longer as well. 1 was the longest and even that wasn't that long, I could complete Fable 2 in a few hours. :S

Comment #26 by: Lag on 15 Jun 2011, 05:06 UTC reply to this comment

In my opinion I think they should go back to fable 1 controls as far as combat goes, fable 2 for character interactment, fable 3 for... anything that adds to the game.. Maybe a prequel would help as far as the story goes... I don't think going down through descendents is going to work much more.

Comment #27 by: /rant on 06 Jul 2011, 10:04 UTC reply to this comment

God, it's like he picked up a kinect and thought * THIS IS A GOOD IDEA. He just wants to jump on the bandwagon. How about instead of SAYING you will push the envelope on story telling/technology, you do it! You said it for the last two games, which were OK but could clearly be a lot better.

Comment #29 by: goose on 10 Jul 2011, 19:41 UTC reply to this comment

Magic bar, health bar, bow and arrow, common selection of melee weaponry (not just swords and hammers), and i don't exactly know how you would implement 'dying' into the game, but that would be a hell of a lot better than stupid 'knocked out, here's some scars' BS. The main point I want to get across is the challenge of Fable. Fable was fun for me, because I would actually throw fits at the game because i had to think of strategies on how to do quests without dying, and without the group of school girls I'm leading to the end of the quest to die too. Now the npc's never die, and you just follow this gold line everywhere and dispose of mobs like trash. But more so what irritated me was how OP magic is now. The second game, time control. Fixed in Fable 3 considering the potions. Spell weaving, though how absolutely fun that is, if you just grab vortex, and whatever other combo. My favorite Vortex+shock, nothing stands a chance against you, and you can spam lvl 3-4 vortex shock, and those annoying pest mobs will rarely touch you. What I think is easy to fix is to give back the magic bar, and magic pots. Try to limit our options a little. And wtf is this red screen crap when our health gets low. This isn't * COD. As much as I enjoy all of the fable games, these are the things that let me down. Now these are extremely fun games, I absolutely love them, and I will continue to buy Peter's BS, but the challenge is gone for me.

Comment #31 by: bigolgreen on 18 Jul 2011, 05:08 UTC reply to this comment

I have played all the Fables and in my opinion the first was the best hands down. the armor system, the bows and arrows, the way you used magic was so well done but still had room for improvement, but they just took it all away and gave us something alot more robotic in Fable 2, and Fable 3 made it to complicated to use. The magic use in the first one made it easy, fun, and interesting to combine spells and use them against your opponent (my favorite was using berserk, slow time and, double hit and overwhelm a golem) and they took out many fun spells and completely screwed up the magic use. The bows and arrows are just a preference issue for me but, I really like using them compared to the guns. The armor system was completely ruined they had a good thing going, get stronger get better armor, I might suggest a few more options and level of armor but it worked. and if you didnt want armor you could get other stuff as well like mage robes and ranger outfits thgat suited your character that still strengthened your character. Go back to your roots and you will get your fans back, I know ill buy the first copy if they do.

I think that in fable 4, in order to fight the darkness, Theresa uses the spire to bring every hero we've seen so far to the present for an all-out war. Everyone from scarlet robe to hammer, Garth, and reaver. And whisper and scythe. Everyone.

I would love it if Fable would take an Assassins Creed: Brotherhood turn. Imagine the hero rebuilding the Guild and serving as guildmaster, or at least a high ranking official (a diversion in the story's plot). The story either needs to move backwards into the Old Kingdom, or forward into a new era of heroes. Enough of this 4 hero/1 hero * .

Comment #35 by: Customizer on 07 Aug 2011, 07:37 UTC reply to this comment

Peter, I just have one thing to ask of you:

WHAT THE * MADE YOU HATE ARMOR SO MUCH?

The selection of armor was nonexistent in F2 save for the Knothole set, and I can't even recall buying jack * in F3.

What happened to all the plate armor, leather armor, sets of CLOTHES in Fable? F2 gave us something like four unique sets of gender specific armor. I was so disappointed.

Comment #36 by: the voice of reason on 07 Aug 2011, 16:15 UTC reply to this comment

I feel as if the all the games are completely different from one another. fable 1 allowed the most freedom with armor, weapons, etc and you really saw you character age. In fable 2 story was pretty good and lots items to play with, but no armor and age was almost irrelevant. In fable 3 your choices for weaponry were small, again no armor, the purchasing was limited, no health bar, with no inventory, and the character himself only improves his weapons, however fantastic story, with actual dilemmas a king/queen would have to face. If fable 4 was given the best of all of these games; the freedom of the first, the interactions and small details of the second, and a fantastic story like the third, fable 4 should be a fantastic game.Just like we all want it to be. Oh and i think the fans want a prequel ;)

Comment #37 by: captainpunkrock on 08 Aug 2011, 22:17 UTC reply to this comment

I think that if they make another one it should be a prequel, Fable: Rise of the Archon. It will be about William Black defeating Jack of Blades and killing the Queen and Knight of Blades.

I am a huge Fable fan. In fact that was the game that made me buy a 360. As a fan I would love to see bows make a comeback and maybe throwback to swords and armor. The first and second installments were downright awesome but the third seems clumsy and with the lack of spells compared to the first and the lack of clothing and options compared to the second I just that the things that made fable awesome have been replaced with fancy menus and a holding hand walkthrough. This is a game of exploration and adventure where the gamer shapes the world. Thats what has always attracted gamers to the fable series. I loved the leveling and spells of fable 1
and the options of well everything in fable 2 so maybe combining the two predating fable 1 with better graphics and this is just my opinion would revitilize the series and bring it back to what it was suppose to be. Still a huge fan and have been since the beginning just posting my thoughts.
