“Going out at the right time is going to make your show last forever”

All good things must come to an end, the saying goes. In television, with scripted series, it’s best if all good things come to an end at the right moment, or they will be outstaying their welcome, making fans weary, frustrated, upset.

The people over at FX believe that this is the key to having a memorable show, so they’ve decided to end “Justified,” starring Timothy Olyphant, after its next season. That would be its sixth.

Of course, FX executive Nick Grad says that changes to this plan could still appear, according to the needs of the creatives, Variety reports.

However, from what he’s saying, it’s probably safe if you start getting used to the idea that it will be over soon.

“We like having shows that rate really well, and there’s an instinct that you want it to go on forever. But it doesn’t,” Grad says.

“Another metric that’s important to us [beyond ratings] is, ‘What shows are going to be talked about in the next 20 years?’ If you’re making a great, 80-hour movie, it has to have a beginning, middle and end. Going out at the right time is going to make your show last forever — we want to make shows that stand the test of time,” he adds.

Are you a fan of “Justified”? If so, how do you feel about the decision to end it after just 6 seasons?
