Future starts small, but changes everything when big

Integral Memory has announced the launch of its first flash drive featuring a USB Type-C connector made for a new mobile world.

Being compatible with smartphones, tablets, PCs and Macs, the Type-C connector has become the universal carrier of both data and power between devices at higher speeds than the previous USB 3.0. Coupled with the advent of 4K movie resolutions, the need of smaller battery charging times and the general exchange of data at higher speeds, it's clear that the Type-C is a welcome addition.

The main advantage of the Type-C is that it is the first reversible USB interface or a "no wrong way round" fit when attaching to a device. The Fusion USB does not forget users of previous USB type connectors, like Type A for 2.0 and 3.0 ports, around the world, offering them a dual interface in case of need. Thus, it guarantees an efficient transition between existing and future hardware.

Start of the line

Integral Memory's data specs offer the Fusion a starting line storage capacity of 64 GB, delivered in compact, zinc alloy casing. The first USB Type-C drive will support USB 3.1 Gen 1 5Gbit/sec bus speeds, followed in the future by USB 3.1 Gen 2 bus speeds of 10 Gbit/sec. The USB-C connector capability can go much higher if you are Intel. By announcing at Computex 2015 that it would join the USB Type-C bandwagon, Intel's Thunderbolt has just brought the high-speed big guns of transfer rates through cable to the USB-C party. Boasting 40 Gbps transfer speeds enough to power two 4k screens, Thunderbolts will bring USB-C tech modified by patented Intel hardware inside the connector itself.

Coming back at Fusion USB-C, this is not really an option to jump forward in buying at the moment. Even though it'll be available in Q3 2015, it's still just the first in a probable series of flash drives. As more USB Type-C flash drives become available from other manufacturers too and with larger storage capacities, it’s best to hold your wallets for the time being.
