How one can win the final battle by being really lucky

The core structure of FTL involves running away, taking out enemies in order to get the resources one requires so that he can get to the final sector on the star map, where you can deliver the all-important intelligence to the Federation Armada, which is ready to take out the rebels.

Warning: spoilers for FTL follow.

This game is a rogue-like so, in the end, the game does something infuriating and asks the player to stop running away and actually face the worst of his foes, a Rebel flagship that is unlike anything else the game has previously thrown at you.

As I previously detailed, I was in a pretty good position when I reached the final sector, using the Weapons Pre-Igniter, which allows me to jump in with weapons powered-up and with one Fire Bomb ready to take out the most important enemy subsystems.

My first encounter with the flagship was almost trivial: I took out one level of shielding, dropped the rest of its protections with my burst lasers and then used the rest of my weapons to take out its weapons control and engine.

This meant that it was easy to then drop its full strength and defeat it.

Little did I know that I had to take out another two incarnations of the same flagship, one of them focused on drones and another that features a superweapon, which made the fight much harder than it should have been.

The drone fight was the hardest of them all, with my weapon setup, and I was pretty sure that I would die before finishing off the third incarnation of the flagship.

Some lucky shots to the enemy shields and solid breach and fire management allowed me to take it out with a sliver of hull strength left and claim my first FTL victory.
