The development team working on the new Advanced Edition for FTL: Faster than Light announces that it plans to add a new race of aliens to the game via the free update. They will offer a bigger challenge when they attack the gamer's ship and will add more options if one of them becomes a recruit.

The Lanius are creatures that do not require life support to exist, but suck the oxygen right out of a room and have begun roaming Federation space seeking metal deposits.

The team explains on the official game blog that, “Their society ebbs and flows in hibernation cycles; they may lie dormant for many years, even while hurtling through space. As soon as they become aware of significant metal deposits they reawaken. Usually this occurs in the dying stages of a galactic civilization or in the wake of intergalactic war.”

FTL: Advanced Edition will also add an entire new ship layout based on the Lanius and 8 new versions of the vessels that have already been included.

The new version of the game will be offered for free in 2014.
