One of the methods for large scale spreading of unwanted e-mail messages is to transform every infected system into a spam generator; these systems, which operate without the user's knowledge, are called zombie computers.

To eliminate this kind of threat, the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has proposed the disconnecting of zombie computers from the Internet until they are cleaned of viruses and worms and unable to spread malicious codes.

FTC has announced that it wants to question over 3,000 ISPs from around the world to make sure that their clients' systems are not included in a zombie spamming system.

The spreading rate for worms and viruses is accelerated by the ignorance and indifference of the Internet surfers, and that is why FTC turns to Internet service providers to stop this massive spreading.

Internet service providers should track the computers from their networks that send a large number of e-mail messages and isolate the ones that fit the description.

According to the statistics, the networks that send infected e-mails through zombie computers represent 50 to 80% of the total world wide spam. FTC announces that 25 countries, from Bulgaria to Peru, have agreed with this campaign.
