FDA issues warning over Hydroxycut products, following reports of liver damage and one death

Hydroxycut is a fat-burner marketed as a dietary supplement, and is very popular in US nutrition stores and pharmacies. Over the weekend, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public warning saying people should stop taking all of the known products of Iovate Health Sciences Inc. since they’re believed to cause liver damage and even death, as the Wall Street Journal can confirm.

Apparently, the FDA has received so far 23 serious complaints, of people who have taken one variety of Hydroxycut. Moreover, a 19-year-old man died, presumably because of liver failure caused by one of the supplements. Although these are advertised as “all natural,” it is believed a combination of two elements (possibly not that naturally after all) is causing this side effects in users. Until further investigation indicates just which these two elements are, it’s best if consumers stay away from all these products sold under the Hydroxycut label.

“Consumers should ‘immediately stop’ using Hydroxycut weight-loss products amid concerns they may cause jaundice and liver failure. […] The FDA has received 23 serious reports of health problems with Hydroxycut products and one death in a 19-year-old male who had used the weight-loss products, said Linda Katz, interim chief medical officer in the FDA’s food safety and nutrition division. The FDA strongly advises people against using 14 Hydroxycut products, Ms. Katz said. Iovate Health Sciences Inc. of Canada markets the products, also known as dietary supplements, as fat burners and energy-enhancers. Iovate representatives couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.” the aforementioned publication says of the warning issued the other day.

Although not all Hydroxycut products have the same ingredients, for which reason not all of them have been pulled off the market, the FDA advises people to stop using them until further notice. Similarly, people who have had health issues following treatment with the supplements (which are said to be this popular because they actually work), are urged to contact their physicians or to go to the hospital for a checkup.
