The FBI’s report entitled “Bitcoin Virtual Currency: Intelligence. Unique Features Present Distinct Challenges for Deterring Illicit Activity” that we presented last week wasn’t classified, but it was labeled as being for “official use only.” FBI representatives confirmed its authenticity, but they claim that they don’t know who leaked it.

BetaBeat obtained a statement from the Bureau regarding the report that details the use of Bitcoins and other virtual currency for criminal activities.

“These documents are not for release beyond law enforcement and public safety personnel. We provactively gather intelligence and share information with our law enforcement and intelligence community partners related to a wide range of potential threats,” an FBI spokesperson said.

Since the report was sent out to 11 agencies, including ones from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, any one of them could be responsible for the leak.
