The Boston Marathon bombings are a perfect topic for cybercriminals and scammers so it’s important for users to make sure they don’t rush to click on suspicious links, or donate to unverified charities that claim to raise money for victims.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have issued alerts to warn users about the scams that are currently making the rounds.

“While Americans feel the need to assist or contribute to those affected by this tragedy; criminals see it as a way to exploit contributor’s kindness. History has shown criminals utilize disasters to take advantage of those wanting to assist,” the FBI warns.

The agency says numerous new domains have been set up over the past days by cybercriminals and fraudsters. The Bureau also highlights the dangers posed by the latest email campaign which lures users to malware-serving websites.

The BBB reveals that the first Boston Marathon explosions charity scam surfaced just hours after the incident.

“Tragedies inspire people to give,” noted H. Art Taylor, president and CEO of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, “but, tragedies – whether natural disasters or manmade catastrophes – also inspire scammers to take advantage of that generosity.”

Taylor continued, “Social media, in particular, makes it very easy to reach a lot of people quickly, when emotions are running high and people feel the need to take action, any action, to help.”

Before handing over money to anyone, make sure the organization they represent is legit. Verify how the money will be used, if the organization plans to provide an accounting of how the funds are spent, and check if the charity is registered with a state government agency.
