Faster memory reasonably priced

G.Skill is very well known in overclocker communities as a supplier of memory modules that are both fast and well priced. This time it's about a midrange product, F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ 2GB kit featuring the ever present Micron D9 chips, this time not in the high performance form, but in a more "vanilla" version. It's not the mighty D9GKX but the modest D9GMH using 4-4-4-12 latency times at DDR2-800, instead of values like 3-3-3. There are downsides to that, but keep in mind that, although the chips are a poorer overclocker than their more expensive counterparts, they also need a default voltage of 1.9V to 2.1V to work, which is good if your motherboard does not have a BIOS setting for memory voltage higher than 2.1V.

On the performance side, overvoltage seems to help, giving the memory a comfortable boost. It actually runs error free at 1067MHz with 4-4-4 timings, but that requires 2.4V. Performance is indeed comparable to any other D9 based memory, but what matters most is that the price tag is $330 to $370, which is quite good if you consider recent increases in memory modules pricing. And above all that, it's a good performing memory, as good as its OCZ and Corsair when it comes to overclocking.
