There might not be many of them, but memory cards with built-in wireless connectivity definitely exist, as proven, yet again, by Eye-Fi, whose latest product has just become the subject of a press release.

Hybrid devices are definitely not a new concept on the IT market but neither are they overly widespread.

In fact, when it comes to each individual hardware category, hybrids account for a very small part of the shipments of whatever product types they fit in.

HHD drives (hybrid hard drives) can be seen as the prime example, as they combine the speed of a SSD and the capacity of a HDD but are not exactly perfected or popular yet.

Memory cards with wireless support are in the same boat, more or less, but this only served to spur Eye-Fi into making a new one.

As revealed by a press release, the Mobile X2 has been delivered, this being a SD card with support for WiFi, so that it may transmit images and video to iOS and Android tablets.

"When we undertook a redesign of the Eye-Fi card line a little over two years ago, the new X2 card platform promised users the potential for new, exciting capabilities over time,”said Yuval Koren, co-founder and chief product officer of Eye-Fi.

“Today we see another one of these revolutionary capabilities come to life: Direct Mode."

The newcomer has a capacity of 8 GB and should sell for $80, although only next week. Fortunately, those interested can already pre-order it here. Meanwhile, the Pro X2 will be getting a discount, dropping from $149.99 to $99.99.

"Direct Mode helps us bridge the gap between classic digital imaging and the exploding world of mobile devices," said Jef Holove, CEO of Eye-Fi. "With Direct Mode and our new Android and iOS apps, the pervasive connectivity of mobile is made available to existing cameras."
