GoPro claims that Windows still needs to deal with security threats

Several companies and organizations around the world have decided to dump Windows and move to either Ubuntu or Mac OS X, so it’s no surprise that extreme sports camera product GoPro does the same thing.

Speaking to V3, GoPro’s CTO Stephen Baumer explained that Windows still needs to improve its security side and malware still represents a major threat for many users of Microsoft’s operating system.

As a result, GoPro encourages employees to make the switch to Mac OS X, as it’s not only safer, but also more user-friendly than Windows 8.

"There's always been this thing that it's cheaper to run your whole enterprise on Windows, but I don't believe that. If you look at the virus footprint alone and what that means for a company – that's non-existent for us," he said in a statement.

"We give users the option and if they really want Windows we'll try and get them to take a Mac machine and we'll install Windows on it for them, but we try and encourage them to take a Mac."

Microsoft, on the other hand, continues to claim that the Windows platform in general, and Windows 8 in particular, is much better than all the other rivals currently on the market, regardless of whether you’re planning to use it in a company or at home.

Microsoft says that Windows 8 is the most secure Windows version to date, as it packs quite a lot of improvements, all of which are supposed to protect users and their data. The OS, for instance, comes with a built-in anti-virus system called Windows Defender that’s installed by default on all versions of Windows 8.

This year alone, Microsoft has released a total of 738 patches for Windows 8, some of which were addressing security vulnerabilities in the operating system.
