Microsoft has published two different lists, one including applications and the other the hardware fully compatible with Windows Vista. "Applications that have earned the "Certified for Windows Vista" logo or the "Works with Windows Vista" logo" and "Windows Vista Hardware Compatibility List" are the two resources made available by the Redmond Company that cover the support of software and hardware products for Windows Vista.

In order to give customers clues in this regard, the Redmond Company has evolved the Designed for XP logo initiative and have introduced the Windows Vista Logo Program. As part of the next generation of the logo program, Microsoft has extended the initiative to encompass PCs, peripheral devices and software. The Redmond Company aimed to no less than streamline the acquisition process for hardware and software that customers wish to implement with Windows Vista.

However, there is a difference between the logos. In the sense that Microsoft has separated the hardware and software products that will deliver only a basic experience from those that will take advantage of the full capabilities of Windows Vista.

In the adjacent image, the gray logos at the bottom are the Windows Vista Basic Logos. The one on the left applies to devices and software, the one on the right to full systems. The products labeled with the Vista Basic Logo do not only support the operating system but have also been tested according to Microsoft's standards of compatibility, reliability and security.

The Certified for Windows Vista Logos will identify products that will deliver a superior experience in concert with Windows Vista. "Software and devices that are Certified for Windows Vista have passed rigorous testing to ensure ease-of-use, better performance, and enhanced security, which means you'll get a superior experience. Certified products make activities like enjoying photos and music, setting up wireless networks, connecting with friends, and doing business faster, easier, and more secure. With certified products, you can be sure you've made the right purchase," Microsoft added.
