The secret is in a good primer

Women know that, while the moment they step out the door for a night out, they look as if ripped from a glamour magazine, not the same can be said for when they return home in the wee hours of morning. Although celebrity makeup artist Kela Wong describes the latter look as of a “horror movie extra,” and with good reason in many cases, she also assures us that there are several ways to prevent that from happening and to make makeup last for as long as we stay out.

A gorgeous makeup can be just that and not last two entire hours if we’re not careful enough with how we apply it, Wong tells us. So, in true “everything good begins at home” fashion, we should take all the necessary steps towards making sure our makeup won’t run at the first “sign” of good fun. First things first, before applying makeup, we should moisturize both our face and neck because it is this the secret to a long-lasting makeup, and not the foundation, as believed until now.

After a moisturizing cream has been applied, a primer should also be used, to ensure more adherence for the foundation, as well as an even coverage. Wong, for instance, recommends Skin Prep FX Primer by Cover FX for the best results. “At the same time it gives makeup incredible staying power, whereas without a primer, makeup tends to be absorbed and look blotchy half way through the day,” she says.

The primer in place, it’s time to put on foundation, which we should do by the same rules we all know since for ever. As a tip to make it last more, Wong advises foundation to be set in place with face powder and cheek blush, while also choosing a product that has a higher coverage, since these have been proven to be more efficient in this sense.

In order to have the best results with eye makeup as well, Wong says nothing beats the primer here too. Not only will it make eyeshadow stick better and not crease up after just a few hours, but it will also ensure a more vibrant color. Topping the eyeshadow with extra-length mascara will certainly make our makeup all the more irresistible. As for the lips, since night makeup is all about the eyes, Wong recommends a sweet-colored gloss, singling out Cargo as the most “lightweight and long wearing without that sticky goo feeling.”

With this in mind, there’s literally nothing standing in our way of looking smashing from dusk till dawn, one shot too many or not.
