Our reader claims this is the result of using an official Apple Bumper case

One unhappy iPhone 4 owner has contacted Softpedia with imagery aiming to show that official Bumper cases from Apple can damage the steel frame on the device after only a few uses.

Softpedia had previously noted that customers were beginning to report noticing scratches on their iPhones’ outer antenna after using the official Bumper case from Apple.

After seeing our post, reader Craig dropped us a line in the comments, saying “both mine and my friends iphone's are being scratched by official apple bumpers! not too happy!”

Apple’s Bumpers are made from a combination of rubber and molded plastic. However, the accessory also boasts metal buttons for volume and power.

We asked Craig to provide us with some pictures of his iPhone 4, as well as to include some information on how and where he uses his iPhone 4.

In an email conversation he told Softpedia, "I take the bumper off around once a week when I need to charge my phone at work, as I’ve got the older style cable there which won’t fit in the phone when the bumper is on.”

Craig is an IT guy, "so it's not really in an environment that could cause scratches," he added. “The phone is either in my pocket, in its Bumper, or on my desk charging without it,” he clarified for Softpedia.

His friend, who got his Bumper through Apple’s free case program, stopped using the case after just a couple of days, as he too had started to notice scratches appearing on his phone, Craig said.

Softpedia cannot confirm that Craig’s story is 100% true, but we sense he is a mature thinking person who wouldn’t have left out important details such as dropping the phone onto a hard surface.

Metal can be easily damaged. Nothing is perfect.

That's Chinese steel for you.

This is absolutely ABSURD. The bumpers are cover ALL the metal parts that touch the iphone with rubber/silicon, it's imposible to scratch! Mine are perfect by the way. Also, it's seems that the buttons of the picture is cover by sand or something like that... That can explain the scratchs.

Yes apple bumpers scratch the iphone stainless steel.

Using the iphone since day one with the bumper and the stainless metal is scratched! No sand or dust on it...

The bumper doesn't fit perfectly the phone, there is a bit of looseness there, the friction between the plastic and the metal it's the cause of the scratches.

The same thing happened to me and so used scotch-brite pad to remove the scratches which made the finish like brand new. when i put the case back on and took it off after an 8 hour work shift the marks were back on! yes the iphone 4 bumper scratches / marks the metal antenna. Scotch-brite pad rubbed on the metal antenna restores the brush effect!

I also have similar scratches on the metal band as a result of Apple's bumper.

Comment #8 by: Royal on 06 Sep 2010, 16:22 UTC reply to this comment

they should have done a brushed finish, therefore owners could remove scratches easily with a bit of steel wool.

My phone looks exactly the same, that iphone bumper got thrown in the garbage..

People think owners are stupid for complaining.. I dont see what is so un-logical about being upset over something ruining the phone, when its meant to protect it. Especially an apple branded case. I would have covered it in scotch tape or something, had i known apple had such a design flaw on their hands.

what is a truly gorgeous phone, looks like garbage, from the simple act of putting a case on it? When some people are paying near $1000 for unlocked units... Thanks apple

The bumper is NOT scratching the antenna. It's POLISHING it. The little flash of plastic bits left in the bumper are rubbing the satin finish until it look like high polished metal. No metal is lost or moved as it would be in a scratch.

Spread the word. I'm sick of people reporting it being scratched and not knowing how to fix it.

FIX:
Very fine grain sand paper with a tiny amount of water. Rub gently until you get the satin look back

I think this is the best explanation and suggestion how to remove it. I did with scotch-brite and it worked.

WRONG. The clear coat is being scratched. If you have an early iPhone 4 you may not have clear coat.

i have the exact same issue, i noticed it early enough to stop using the bumper, but i am ticked and im going to try to get a replacement, this is no way our fault in anyway, this was an apple product we were using and it is their fault that our phones got scratch by something that should of prevented it from scratching.

my i phone 4 also got scratches the same way!!!

Comment #12 by: IlluminattiDelta on 23 Sep 2010, 20:51 UTC reply to this comment

Every thread I read is the same: some people who find there antenna altered and some who do not. The truth is plastic CAN alter the surface of metal the way a car detailer can polish the surface of a car with cloth. It is really just unfortunate that after all of the hype, when you break down the phone down piece by piece of $#!%, its nothing more than an expensive hassel. And yes, my phone was scratched by the case and I'm pissed.

My iPhone is all scratched up on the aluminum band. I have terribly disappointed in apple for all of the problems they have caused. Only a few days with the bumper on, and it can cause lots of damage to the phone. I hadn't dropped mine once!

i'v got my white iphone 4 last month, and i never use any case or bumper for my i4.But my white iphone 4 still look shining and no scratch till now.Just put it intoy pouch beg after used it.

Comment #18.1 by: iphone 4 on 09 Aug 2011, 04:39 GMT

the bumpers dont actually damage the metal frame
its grains of dirt or dust etc that gets cought in between
the bumper and the metal. every time you grab your phone
you are basically sanding the frame when you grip it. to avoid this you have
constantly clean the in side of the bumper and the phone.
