Following the introduction of the second service pack for Exchange Server 2007, Microsoft is also updating the resources offered along with the product. One illustrative example is the Supportability Matrix. Made available via TechNet, the Exchange Server Supportability Matrix is meant to centralize information designed to allow Exchange Administrators to get an insight into the level of support that Microsoft is offering for Exchange Server configurations and components.

“With the release of Exchange 2007 SP2 we are providing a supportability matrix that identifies the various supported configurations of Exchange Server (operating system, Active Directory, Clients, .Net Framework, etc). You can find this document on our Exchange TechCenter,” revealed Ross Smith IV, a member of the Customer Experience team.

Microsoft made available for download Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) at the end of August 2009, while working in parallel on the next iteration of the solution. In this context, customers are now capable of upgrading to the second service pack for Exchange 2007, but also to test drive the upcoming version of Exchange Server. Microsoft has so far pushed Exchange Server 2010 to the Release Candidate stage. Below you will be able to read a few highlights from the Exchange Server 2007 SP2 Supportability Matrix.

“Exchange Server 2003 is not supported in Active Directory environments whose domain/forest functional levels have been raised beyond Windows Server 2003. However, Exchange Server 2003 SP2 can function against Windows Server 2008 Active Directory servers. Exchange Server 2007 is not supported on Windows Server 2008 R2. However, Exchange 2007 SP1 RU9 and SP2 are supported against Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory servers. In addition, Exchange 2007 SP1 RU9 and SP2 are supported in Active Directory environments whose domain/forest functional levels have been raised to Windows Server 2008 R2. Exchange 2007 SP2 is supported with PowerShell 2.0,” Smith added.
