ExTiX 14.1.2 64-bit, a distribution based on the recently launched operating system from Canonical, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, has been officially released.

The developer rebased the distribution on the newer Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) a while ago and this new build is mostly about updates and fixes. Users are provided with a GNOME 3.10 desktop and GNOME Classic 3.10. For users who want a lighter system, Razor-qt 0.5.2 is also available in ExTiX Light.

“All packages have been updated to the latest version by 140804. VLC (installed from source to make it possible to run it when logged in as root) is in version 2.1.4. Kernel 3.15.0-6-exton has been replaced by kernel 3.16.0-5-exton. (Kernel.org's kernel 3.16.0-rc6, released 140718),” reads the official announcement.

“I've made a new lighter version of ExTiX. It uses Razor-qt as Desktop Environment, Slim as Login Manager and kernel 3.15.0-0-exton. (Razor-qt is an advanced, easy-to-use, and fast desktop environment based on Qt technologies. It has been tailored for users who value simplicity, speed, and an intuitive interface). My info/instructions below also apply to ExTiX Light. I.e. just log in as root (with password root) or extix (with no password) from Slim's login screen to Razor-qt.”

Users will also find a number of applications that are not usually provided by default in Ubuntu, such as VLC 2.1.4 for example, but it also comes with a customized kernel. The previous 3.15.0-6-exton kernel has been replaced with a newer one, 3.16.0-5-exton, which is actually based on 3.16.0-rc6.

This is a rather interesting decision made by the developer, to base the kernel on a development version, but it's possible that a new Linux kernel will be made available now that the 3.16 branch is stable.

ExTiX 14.1.2 comes with some very interesting features. For example, the ISO is actually a hybrid, which means that if you are running the operating system Live from a USB stick you can make changes to it and they will remain in place after the reboot.

The operating system is also capable of running straight from RAM. Unlike most other Live operating systems, if you choose the option Copy to RAM, you will be able to pull the USB or the disc and ExTiX will continue to run unimpeded (you won’t be able to save things after the restart).

Check the official website for more details about this release. You can download ExTiX 14.1.2 64-bit right now from Softpedia. Keep in mind that the developer doesn't make a 32-bit version of this distribution.
