A major supplier of silicon solutions, ESS Technology today announced the election of Dr. Gilbert Amelio as executive chairman of the board, replacing Kenneth Levy, who will remain a member.

If you’re acquainted with the life of Steve Jobs, you may have heard of Gil Amelio, who ran Apple (mostly into the ground) for a few years before Jobs made his triumphant return at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California.

Dr. Amelio has served as a director of ESS since January 2009, and he is regarded as a big player in Silicon Valley. He’s also been chairman and chief operating officer of National Semiconductor, and serving in key tenures over at Bell Labs, Fairchild, and Rockwell Semiconductor. Safe to say the guy knows a thing or two about chips.

Commenting on his promotion, Dr. Amelio said, “ESS is a highly innovative company focused on developing the highest performing analog and digital audio products while simultaneously reducing power requirements and time to market. In the future, ESS’s proprietary Digital-Analog and Enigma technologies will become the standard methods to design analog circuits.”
