Turtle Rock Studios is apparently still experimenting with a lot of the options

Turtle Rock Studios have changed the way its alien monster beasts progress and gain new abilities in the upcoming team-based asymmetrical shooter Evolve.

The development team has uprooted the entire concept behind character progression of the 1 part from the 4v1 multiplayer action in Evolve. The initial preview build revealed the first announced monster, the Goliath, eating wildlife around the map in order to evolve, as revealed by IGN.

Players used to choose two abilities and then munch on woodland critters in order to unlock the other ones, and it made a neat and clean way to let everyone know what's going on, as the hunters would know the beast grew by the fact that it now uses an additional ability from its arsenal of four – fire-breath, rock throw, charge and pounce.

The mechanic has now been altered so that players start off with three points that they can use to unlock up to three powers. Each new evolutionary step affords players three new points that they can use to either unlock the fourth power or upgrade the ones they already have, and monster players will never get to have enough points to max out all their powers.

A 2K representative mentioned that each extra stat point that Goliath players earn increases an ability's strength by around 15 to 25 percent, and it appears that this is likely to be the definitive way upgrading will work in the final game.

Evolve is set to launch on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, later this year.
