Turtle Rock could have made unlocking new things easier

Evolve launched almost two weeks ago, and with the exception of hardcore fans who have dedicated all their time to the multiplayer experience, only now are people starting to completely unlock all the different characters in the shooter, which is a testament to the dull nature of the grinding system implemented by developer Turtle Rock Studios.

Evolve finally rolled out earlier this month, and despite boasting an impressive roster of characters for both the Hunter and the Monster factions, only one of each class is available as standard in the game. The rest have to be unlocked by grinding out performances.

The benchmarks deal with using all the different abilities of that respective hunter or monster, but the actual target figures are very hard to achieve in many cases and in some situations they can barely be completed during regular matches.

Grinding weighs down the whole game

Case in point is Val, the first medic hunter that's available for players. While you can easily reach the target goals when it comes to using the burst heal or the health ray, it's quite difficult to reach the ones for her armor-piercing sniper or her tranquilize gun.

What's more, in many situations you have to use your health ray or boost to keep your allies alive. If you swap to your other guns in order to stop the monster, you're effectively leaving them exposed to the monster. Throw in the other troubles of playing a medic, like the constant harassment from the enemy creature, and things get tough.

I also had problems while trying to unlock the second support, Bucket, using the first one, Hank. While you can easily complete the goals for using his laser cutter or invisibility field, nailing the perfect orbital strikes or shielding enough damage is much, much harder.

Another complain relating to the grinding process is that, sometimes, I'll get placed into matches that are still ongoing and tasked with guiding a character that I've yet to unlock. After completing the match, your completion stats aren't recorded, which isn't all that great, especially if you had a good performance.

Turtle Rock should really examine the unlock stats in Evolve and tweak what's necessary, as quite a few players get burnt out while trying to unlock the next characters.
