Remakes of cult hits are usually unwanted, mostly because they rarely manage to do justice to the original, upsetting fans and insulting newcomers by offering them a low-grade version of the first hit. This isn’t the case with Fede Alvarez’s take on the 1981 horror “Evil Dead.”

The film has just premiered at SXSW 2013 and, according to a review on The Hollywood Reporter, it’s everything that we were promised it would be, while also moving a bit away from the original.

Alvarez’s film is more graphic, more violent and gag-inducing, more action packed, taking viewers into the hell that was merely glimpsed in the original.

The jokes are gone but also are the cheap thrills: this is truly the “most terrifying film you will ever experience,” as its poster boasts.

THR calls it an “unasked-for but entirely welcome remake,” one that is bound to open a new chapter for horror movies.

It will be out in theaters on April 12. If you wish to get an idea of the gore in it, check out the trailer above, but *please note that extreme discretion is recommended because it contains images that will offend.
