When we refer to messaging app WhatsApp, we keep saying it’s very popular – but what does that mean exactly? You’ll find out in a short while.

Ever since the service has been acquired by social media giant Facebook, its monthly active users (MAU) numbers have gone through the roof.

Back in August 2014, WhatsApp had been downloaded, installed and actively used by some 600 million users, but since then a lot more have been joining the bandwagon.

WhatsApp hits 700 million user threshold

WhatsApp founder, Jan Koum himself announced that the mobile applications now houses under its umbrella over 700 million users. More than that, we were told that each day users now send over 30 billion messages.

He further added that these encouraging numbers are pumping the team in charge of WhatsApp development to continue adding great features further on in 2015.

WhatsApp is expected to add a whole host of novelties this year, starting with the desktop version of the app.

On top of that, the much-anticipated voice-calling feature should also make its way to the application this year.

New, much anticipated feats set to arrive in 2015

And just yesterday, some code-strings dug up from WhatsApp’s own iPhone app which was updated back in November, showed that the app will be working hand in hand with one of its biggest competitors in order to offer a new feature called “Call via Skype.”

That’s not the only novelty the voice calling feature will bring about. The same string also provided references to a so-called “Driving Mode” which could be code for some sort of “Do Not Disturb”-like profile.

Another possibility is that “Driving Mode” will end up reading out loud messages and calls so as to allow you to concentrate on the road ahead and not on your phone.

Naturally, these upcoming feats will continue to add more users to the overall WhatsApp roster. How much will the messaging app keep growing?
