Evernote for Android has just been upgraded to version 3.6, with some appealing new features packed inside, such as speech recognition and a new set of widget capabilities.

Through the brand new Evernote for Android application version, users should find it easier than before to dictate notes on their devices.

The software did come with audio features from the beginning, but they are now expanded through the addition of voice recognition.

To make use of Speech-to-text, people will simply have to tap the speech bubble icon in the toolbar. When they begin to talk, the application will insert the words into the body of the note as text.

“When you’re done recording, we also attach the original audio to the note. By having both recording and text together, you can now easily search and find your audio notes,” the company notes.

“If you’d like to capture audio without the speech recognition, then simply tap and hold the speech bubble icon. It will switch to a microphone. Tap the microphone to start recording.”

The new feature takes advantage of the text transcription service in Android, but requires a network connection to work. The feature is compatible only with devices powered by Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform (some certain other devices can also benefit from it).

“If you see the speech-to-text option appear when you update, then you’ll know that your phone or tablet supports the functionality,” the company notes.

Along with this speech recognition feature, the new flavor of Evernote for Android arrives on devices with a new set of capabilities for its widget app, which is available as a separate download in the Google Play Store.

Users will be able to enjoy better customization features for the widget, including a new gear icon that for options such as:

- Widget Color: Choose between original green or a new dark theme - Custom buttons: Choose which Evernote functions appear in the widget - Large widget notes: Choose what notes appears in the large widget—last viewed; last updates; specific notebooks, tags, or Saved Searches

Moreover, when long pressing on the phone’s home screen, users will be taken to the Widget menu, where they will see a “tiny 1×1 single function Evernote widget” meant to enable them to place a single Evernote function anywhere they like.

“The newest widget function is the Quick Snapshot. This feature truly lives up to its name. Tap on the Quick Snapshot icon, camera with lightning bolt, to launch the camera. Snap your photo and tap save. That’s it. A new snapshot note will be added to your Evernote account with an auto-generated title,” Evernote also announced.

On top of that, there are various other bug fixes and enhancements included in the new release, aimed at making the application faster and more reliable.
