The Evernote application for Android devices has been updated this week with a nice range of enhancements, including support for handwritten notes, which has been included in the beta version of the app several weeks ago.

According to Evernote, the support for taking handwritten notes should provide users with the possibility to write down things that they could not before.

Thus, the digital handwriting in Evernote for Android does not come only as an alternative way for input, but is capable of actually extending the experience that this application was previously providing to its users.

“Sometimes there’s no better way to capture an idea than to write it down or sketch it out. Whether a graph from a meeting, an equation from class or an inspiration while traveling, handwriting can be the most direct way to express what you’re thinking or seeing,” the team notes in a blog post.

Evernote will also allow users to easily switch from typing to handwriting notes and back to typing again, all in a single note. Thus, they will be able to write down more content than before.

“Say you’re in chemistry class. You should be able to type everything that the professor says, draw a chemical structure, type some more, all while recording audio from the lecture. These aren’t separate ideas. They should all live together. And that’s what we built,” the team explains.

When using the app, users can choose the pen from the paperclip icon, while also being able to get more writing area through tapping the down arrow and hitting the plus button.

Using two fingers, they can easily move the handwriting area around. They will also be able to change color and thickness of the pen when writing down a note.

After finishing the handwriting, they will need to tap the checkmark to have it saved, and they can continue typing into that note, add attachments to it, record audio, and do more.

The support for handwritten notes is enhanced by Evernote’s purchase of Penultimate, the iPad handwriting app. “Writing and making that writing searchable is in our DNA,” Evernote claims.

The new flavor of the Android application also comes with an improved editor, as well as with enhanced camera features. The software can handle notes taken on other platforms much better than before, while also offering a new highlighting option, so that users could add emphasis to their notes.

There is also the option to create duplicate notes, as well as the possibility to come up with links to notes, for easy jumping from one to another. Moreover, the camera in Evernote is faster than before and offers better focus and autofocus options.

The updated application also includes a series of bug fixes and stability improvements. You can download Evernote for Android from the Google Play Store.
