Gamers will be able to use real world money for same content

The Sony Online Entertainment created Station Cash currency will no longer be used by players to buy expansion and downloadable content for some of the most important MMOs in the publishers catalog.

Real world money will be required for these purchases for the two EverQuest MMOs and for the more recent DC Universe Online.

A statement from Sony Online Entertainment reads, “The reason for this is simply that these products require a high level of development resource and are therefore a substantial cost.”

It adds, “We want to continue to run aggressive Station Cash promotions, which we know our customers love, but cannot continue to do this and protect the revenue that we need to offset these costs.”

Sony has moved all of its MMOs to the free-to-play model and has since reported an increase in both players and revenue when for all of them.

It’s not clear whether Sony has any plans to remove Station Cash entirely at some point during the future.
