What tablets gain, desktops and laptops are grinding away

Normally, I wouldn't include tablets when looking at the PC industry, but market research firm Canalys does that sort of thing.

Its findings are actually kind of surprising. Surprising and a bit hilarious really.

We all know that tablets have been selling really well, at least compared to laptops and, of course, desktops.

What we, or at least I, didn't know was that even they haven't been able to make up for the poor sales of the last two.

In fact, during the second quarter of the year (2Q13), they only managed to prevent the overall PC market from falling. There was no actual growth in terms of shipments.

The 42.9% jump in tablet sales was negated by the drop of 7.4% in desktops and 13.9% in laptops.

As tablets distance themselves from the rest of PCs, the PC market can go in any direction, unless it stalls again.
