4K resolution is definitely doing better than 3D did at the beginning of its career

Back in 2011 and 2012, makers of displays tried to enchant their buyers by adding 3D support. Ultimately, though, 3D became a small niche and didn't change much. The same can't be said about 4K though.

UHD TVs are definitely doing better, if we were to compare the rate of adoption and consumer interest.

In fact, 4K displays have reached the point where even small companies like, say, Taiwan-based Tatung ship UHD TVs by the thousands.

Tatung expects to ship 2,000 in Taiwan alone, by the end of 2013.

4K resolution, or 3840 x 2160 pixels, is the new groove on the high-end LCD front, and on the new OLED market too, for that matter.

50-inch UHD TVs are the most popular right now, since they're expensive anyway, so people likely to buy a UHD TV will probably afford large panels. The biggest are in 110-inch diagonals though.

Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Philips are among the most important brand names here.
