A silhouette effect is created through different thicknesses of print

3D printing is coming along fast. If it weren't, NASA would not be in a position where it could invest in the development of 3D-printed pizza.

Nonetheless, I still found it a bit unexpected that someone would think of 3D printing photographs of all things.

Amanda Ghassaei posted, on Instructables, her idea for 3D-printed photographs.

The images captured in the photos aren't actually printed in 3D. I imagine that using a picture from a Lytro camera could open up that possibility, but that's neither here nor there.

Anyway, an Objet Connex500 and some specially constructed algorithms were used to convert images to black and white, and assign different printing densities to grayscale pixel value.

The result is a silhouette effect on the 2D image, with different thicknesses of print.
