Even More Google Efforts for the Myanmar Crisis

- Special Google News category rolled out

By: Bogdan Popa, Security and Search Engines Editor

Besides the special Google Earth layer and the donation links published right on the main Google Search page, the Mountain View-based company has taken a new
step into helping the people affected by the Myanmar cyclone and created a special Google News category especially focused on the crisis. "The section is available in the English language editions of Google News in Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The lead stories appear on the front pages of these editions. Like other front page sections, you can find deeper coverage on the specific section page," David Garnick, Product Manager, explained on the Google News blog.

Moreover, the newly-released news section also comes with a donation link than enables you to donate money through Google Checkout straight to UNICEF or Direct Relief International. "Click here to support the victims of the cyclone in Myanmar (Burma)," the new link published below the Google News search box reads. Clicking on it brings you to the same donation page set up by Google a few days ago and promoted through the official search site.

It's important to see that Google gets more involved in such cases as the Mountain View company is said to be one of the most, if not the most, popular company on the web, with millions of users every day. Publishing a direct donation link straight on the main page could obviously help people find out about the tragedy and bring more money to the victims of the cyclone.

Earlier this day, Google has also rolled out a special Google Earth KML file that lets users view photos taken in the aftermath of the the destructive 7.9 magnitude earthquake that hit China a few days ago. The quake made no less than that 50,000 victims, according to various reports, so we should expect new Google campaigns anytime soon.
