Jay Freeman (Saurik) confirms staggering Cydia numbers

A tweet from Pod2g reveals that Cydia is now used by 14 million devices jailbroken with evasi0n, the iOS 6.1 jailbreak tool developed by the evad3rs.

Relaying the statistics dished out by Cydia gatekeeper Saurik, hacker pod2g tweeted earlier today, “New statistic from @saurik: 14,051,500 unique devices have been seen running Cydia on iOS 6.x! 14 millions! [sic] and 23 millions [sic] any version.”

So that’s 14 million iDevices jailbroken with evasi0n under iOS 6.x, and another nine million jailbroken devices under iOS 5 and older versions (hacked using different tools, such as the iPhone Dev Team’s redsn0w).

Considering how many iPhones and iPads are out there (in the hundreds of millions), the number may no seem that big. However, counted against the number of devices running iOS 6, it’s pretty staggering just how many people hack their iDevice these days.

Hacker David Wang (@planetbeing) gave an interview recently in which he noted that Apple’s upcoming iOS 6.1.3 will most likely break evasi0n’s exploits.

Promoted to version 1.5 about a week ago (to improve boot times and update the Cydia package list), evasi0n is available for Mac, Linux, and Windows (download links below).
