Tweets by hacker i0n1c (Stefan Esser) and a post on Y Combinator indicate that Chinese app distribution service Taig paid the Evad3rs a rumored $1 million dollars to release their jailbreak with a bundled Chinese version of Cydia.

Allegedly forcing the Taig app store onto Chinese iDevices jailbroken with evasi0n7, the evad3rs are said to have received a “sponsorship” of $1 million / €730,000 from the Chinese company.

Jailbreaks usually come bundled with Cydia, a curated app store (by creator Jay Freeman, aka @saurik on Twitter) for jailbroken devices. The worst part of it is that Taig is said to be dishing out pirated apps.

“Well, the reason that the Cydia store doesn't work, and that Saurik wasn't included in the discussions, is starting to become clear. A Chinese company paid the evad3rs a rumored 1 million dollars for the jailbreak, forcing their own App Store onto the phone. If the computer running the jailbreak has Chinese as the main language, then the Chinese 太极 (taiji) market app is installed. Cydia is available as an option, but it is deselected by default,” reads the Y Combinator post.

The evad3rs have been quick to respond to the piracy accusations by releasing an open letter to the jailbreak community.
