The team has terminated its relationship with the Chinese app store

After bundling Taig with their Evasi0n7 jailbreak tool, the Evad3rs have removed the Chinese app store (a Cydia replica), addressing privacy concerns.

The team is struggling to keep its image untarnished via a second open letter posted to evasi0n.com, following some controversy that the Evad3rs had received a huge sum of cash to have the Cydia clone installed for Chinese jailbreakers.

Apparently, the latest issues no longer have to do with piracy, but with privacy.

“After rumors abound of encrypted data being sent for users in China who've installed Taig, we decided to do what we do best – reverse engineer the code of Taig to understand what was being sent,” the letter reads.

“Taig transmitted data similar to what Cydia transmits. Unique device identifiers were transmitted in encrypted form similar to how Cydia uses SSL to protect the privacy of its users. Taig did not transmit any private user data from the devices at all,” says the team.

Add to that some piracy concerns and it’s just about enough to call off the whole thing. Which the Evad3rs did, according to their post: “We terminated our relationship with them.”

Regarding that $1 million (€750,000) that Taig reportedly paid to have the digital distribution venue bundled with the jailbreak, the Evad3rs swear they didn’t receive any compensation, neither from Taig nor from anyone else for that matter.

“There have been a lot of rumors listing various amounts we’ve been paid. We have received no monies from any group, including Taig.”

“We will not be accepting any money. Our donations are being given to Public Knowledge, Electronic Frontier Foundation and Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure to help protect jailbreaking as your legal right,” the team claims.
