14 DAY TRIAL // Europol’s European Cybercrime Center (EC3) has published a report on police ransomware and its impact on cyberspace.
The report, made by the EC3 and the Dutch National High Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU), aims at raising awareness of ransomware, but also makes a number of recommendations on what can be done to counter such threats.
The law enforcement assessment reveals that the number of ransomware attacks has increased exponentially over the past couple of years because such operations give cybercriminals the opportunity to make a lot of money in a short period.
The use of ransomware has several advantages. It’s easy to deploy even for less technical savvy criminals, the proceeds are easy to launder because virtual currencies are utilized, and such activities are difficult to investigate because the malicious actors and the infrastructure they use are spread out across many legal jurisdictions.
