Europol has published an 80-page report to detail the agency’s activities and the progress that has been made in various areas in 2012.

The report focuses on drugs, trafficking in human beings, illegal immigration, cybercrime, intellectual property crimes, currency counterfeiting, VAT fraud, cigarette smuggling, money laundering, mobile organized crime groups, terrorism, and outlaw biker gangs.

As far as cybercrime is concerned, the 2012 review highlights the implementation of the agency’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), which aims at helping law enforcement in the fight against what Europol’s Director Rob Wainwright calls “one of the most damaging forms of organized crime the society faces today.”

In the cybercrime section of the report, Operation Thunder, which began in June 2011, is highlighted. The operation targeted Anonymous hackers responsible for launching distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks and defacing websites.

The complete Europol Review 2012 is available on Europol’s website.
