Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that the PlayStation Network will be down in Europe starting at 16:05 GMT on Wednesday, March 9 and until 03:00 on Thursday and advises gamers that are interested in using the service to log in before the downtime begins.
Sony says that during the maintenance period those who own a
PlayStation 3 will not be able to register a new account on PSN, will not be able to manage an already existing account, and will not be able to access the PlayStation Store from the PlayStation 3 or from the PlayStation Portable handheld.
Those who sign with PSN before the start of the maintenance period will be able to play online so all dedicated multiplayer gamers need to log in before 16:05 GMT.
Trophy collection and updates will not be turned off during the downtime and Sony does not expect the maintenance period to be extended beyond 03:00 on Thursday.
The timing for the maintenance seems a bit odd considering that Sony is delivering a content update to PSN on the same day.
Delaying either one of the actions for one day might have been a good idea for the company as some PSN users are already complaining that they will not be able to access some new content because of maintenance.
Sony has not said why the
PlayStation Network needs to be taken down.
The company says, “If you have any questions about this down time, feel free to visit the official PlayStation Forums at community.eu.playstation.com where you can post your query and a member of the moderation team will get back to you.”
Some users are speculating that the downtime is something Sony needs in order to prepare the PSN for a new firmware launch for the PlayStation 3,
Sony has been rumored to prepare an update which will make it more difficult for pirates to run content that has not been signed by Sony.
