Quite a lot of countries in Europe have vowed to improve on their ecological footprint and thus help limit climate change and global warming. According to green group the Dogwood Alliance, there is one small problem: while trying to green up their ways, these countries destroy forests in the United States.

The Dogwood Alliance claims that large patches of land in the southern United States are currently being cleared, and that whatever wood is obtained in this manner is sent to Europe and used as a supposedly green energy source.

The group argues that, all things considered, this practice is bound to harm the environment more than burning fossil fuels does.

This is because deforestation has been documented to destroy ecosystems, and also up the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that hit our planet's atmosphere on a yearly basis.

“Right now wetland hardwood forests from the coast of the Southern US are being clearcut to make wood pellets to burn in Europe to keep the lights on,” explains Scot Quaranda, campaign director with Dogwood Alliance, as cited by Mongabay.

“This has got to stop, Europe should be investing in true renewable like wind and solar, not false solutions like burning Enviva's wood pellets,” he adds.

To prove their point, the greenheads have pieced together a video explaining why Europe must no longer be allowed to burn wood pellets originating in the United States. Check it out below, and share your thoughts in the comments section.
