Gamers can also choose to abandon ideas and cores

The team at Paradox Development Studios working on Europa Universalis IV – Art of War is ready to deliver more information on the way warfare is being changed in the expansion, while also offering gamers a look at the way the Maghreb area of Africa is being changed by the addition of new provinces.

Sorties are now possible, which gives gamers a new army in any province with a fortress of high enough level, which aims to eliminate the besieging forces.

In Art of War, gamers will also be able to abandon an idea group in order to re-evaluate how they lead their country through the ages.

Paradox states, “Doing so will immediately clear that idea group slot and refund 10% of the points you had invested in that idea group (usually 40 points, but may differ depending on active modifiers).”

At the same time, cores can be abandoned, which makes it easier for gamers to sacrifice potential territory gains in order to have more options when dealing with other nations, as long as they are ready to pay a cost of 10 prestige.

The developers add, ”We’ve decided that the terrain system in EU4, while interesting, was difficult for the player to understand and plan their battles around. In the free patch accompanying Art of War, each province has one dominant terrain type that will always be the one used for battles as opposed to having a percentage breakdown of possible terrain types.”

The trade system is also being overhauled, with the demand and offer system ditched in favor of fixed prices for all goods, which are influenced by important events in the world of Europa Universalis IV.

Art of War will also include new mapmodes in the free patch: Simple Terrain, Autonomy and Fort Level.

More provinces and more detail for the Maghreb

In 1444, the area of North Africa is a dynamic one and gamers will need to deal with a new placement for the dessert and with an Eastern crossing for the Sahara, which creates a link with West and North Central Africa.

The Kingdom of Tlemcen is the dominant power and can form Algiers as long as it manages to conquer its neighbors.

The borders of Tunisia have been expanded, and smaller nations like Sus, Tafilalt and Kabylia can appear as a campaign of Europa Universalis IV progresses.

The Art of War expansion and the free patch linked to it will be offered before the end of the year.
