Etoile Live CD

A brand new Live CD based on the Etoile desktop environment was presented at the FOSDEM 2007 (Free and Open Source Software Developer's European Meeting). This is a pre-release version, there are still some problems and you should treat it as such. Please report any bugs you find to their bugtracker: "This is the 0.2 prerelease that we worked on at the fosdem 2007. There's still quite a lot of problems on it (check the bugtracker), so we expect the final 0.2 release in about a month. In the meantime, feel free to download the iso and play with it -- and reports any bugs that are not already in the bugtracker !"
In order to allow users to create their own workflow by reshaping or recombining provided applications, services and components, a group of developers invented a new desktop environment based on the very popular GNUstep window manager. This brand new desktop environment is called Etoile and intends to be an innovative user environment built from the ground up on highly modular and light components with project and document orientation in mind.

Highlights of Etoile desktop manager:

￭ Light, focused applications, cooperating together to provide a rich user experience, using GNUstep services and their innovative Services model;
￭ Fast, simple data sharing between tasks and documents without involving lot of context switches (between applications, windows, selection etc.);
￭ Facility provided by default to composite, layout unrelated elements in first-class objects like documents, folders etc;
￭ Workflow based on project inspired management (versioning, indexing, sharing etc.);
￭ Easy communication/collaboration among users, where users are first-class objects in the environment;
￭ Assistant technology similar to the Newton's approach.

The Live CD is based on the very popular Ubuntu Linux distribution and besides the Etoile desktop environment, it also provides an original GNUstep user environment so you can see the differences between GNUstep and Etoile.
