An Estonian court has acquitted individuals suspected of being involved in a massive fraud case that leveraged the DNSChanger malware.

According to Estonian publication Postimees, the court ruled that they couldn’t be convicted for any crime because the prosecutors have failed to name specific victims. The state will also have to pay €300,000 ($409,000) for defense counsel fees.

The Estonian prosecutor hoped to have them locked up for at least a few years. On the other hand, this doesn’t mean the suspects will walk free. The United States also wants them to face justice.

In November, Estonia agreed to extradite three men allegedly involved in the cybercriminal scheme. Others have already been extradited to the US.

The DNSChanger malware is said to have infected over 4 million computers from all over the world. The cybercriminals are said to have made $14 million (€10.5 million).
