If you're heading for the pool or the beach, these tips are bound to make your life a lot easier

Summer is in full swing, and we're all doing our best to find at least a few spare hours every week for a trip to the beach - or to any other place out there that includes a pool and a lot of wonderfully cool water. With a lot of sunscreen, a few hours of frolicking around in the sea and sand - or simply lounging by the pool sipping on a fresh cocktail - are absolute bliss for our stressed, overworked, worry-consumed selves. Trouble is, we often forget that our hair also has a lot to suffer as a result of prolonged sun, salt and/or chlorine exposure. Here are a few ideas on what to do to avoid having a very bad hair week after your return from the pool or seaside.

First of all, protect your hair the best you can before entering the water. Use a moisturizing shampoo, conditioner and hair mask; don't blow-dry your hair, but rather allow it to dry naturally while you're getting ready to pack your beach bag. While your hair is still moist, add a leave-in hair serum, cream or conditioner - this is essential particularly for the ladies with blonde hair or blonde highlights. You can also use a protective UV hair spray to avoid color fading and reapply it as often as you top up your sunscreen. A leave-in conditioner will also prevent you from getting any wind tangles and keep your hair sleek and easy to style when you return home.

Another piece of advice for pool- or beach-side hair care is to not overdo it. Summer is not about complicated hairdos (unless, of course, you're completely addicted and can't live without them). Focus more on your basic style, try a new hair color or haircut and give your hair and scalp a vacation from the constant blow-drying and heat exposure. If you've got long hair, a wavy, natural-looking 'do will look great on you. Highlight your hair for extra volume and don't obsess too much over fly-away strands. The wavy, "right off the beach" look looks good on just about everyone. If you're gathering your hair into a pony tail, make sure you avoid elastic bands with metal clasps, as they can damage fragile hair. Finally, apply sunscreen on the sides of your head, ears and hair part, if you have one - it will save you a lot of pain and embarrassment later on. Have fun!
