Still based on Bodhi Linux 2.3 and Ubuntu 12.04 repositories

Alejandro Diaz had the pleasure of announcing Softpedia a couple of days ago about the immediate availability for download and upgrade of Escuelas Linux 3.0.23, an open-source computer operating system that is currently still based on the Bodhi Linux 2.3 distribution and uses the software repositories from the upstream Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) distro, built around the Enlightenment E17 desktop environment.

The Escuelas Linux developer says that he managed to keep the distribution up-to-date with the latest software packages without switching to the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) repos by using third-party PPA repositories. He also stated that the Escuelas Linux was not upgraded to Bodhi Linux 3.0 because the upstream OS still has some unresolved issues. Lastly, he justifies sticking with the Enlightenment E17, because it has more features than Enlightenment E19.

“Before we talk about the improvements, let us communicate some decisions and its reasons. As you may have heard, our base distribution, Bodhi Linux, was updated a few days ago to version 3.0, and it is now based in the graphical interface Enlightenment 19 and in the Ubuntu 14.04 repositories. However, Escuelas Linux remains using Bodhi Linux 2.3 with its Ubuntu 12.04 repositories, and Enlightenment 17 as the base of our distro,” was stated in the announcement.

New graphical installer and updater tools have been added

According to the public release notes, Escuelas Linux 3.0.23 includes up-to-date software packages, among which we can mention the recently released LibreOffice 4.4.1 office suite, Mozilla Firefox 36.0 web browser, as well as the latest Adobe Flash Player, version 11.2.202.442. Geogebra 5.0.66, Google Chrome 40, LiveCode 7.0.3, Softmaker FreeOffice rev 698, and Recordmydesktop applications are also included in this release.

The Escuelas Linux 3.0.23 distribution comes with new graphical installer and updater tools that have been engineered in such a way to automatically detect the architecture of the host system (64 or 32-bit), in order to prevent installation mismatch. However, users need to know that the graphical updater tool won’t work correctly if the host system is not running Escuelas Linux 3.0.22, avoiding package mismatches and broken dependencies.

Download Escuelas Linux 3.0.23 right now from Softpedia, where you will find Live DVD ISO images for both 32 and 64-bit computer platforms. In addition, you can also find documentation in English and Spanish languages, in the PDF file format.
