Police have apprehended a 70-year-old man who has been on the run from the law for 36 years.

Michael Morrow escaped jail in California in 1977 and he has lived as Carl Frank Wilson since then.

He got married and had three children, who also gave him grandchildren. He never told his family about being a fugitive.

Morrow had been imprisoned for robbery with a deadly weapon decades ago. He has been hiding out in Garland County, Arkansas.

Detective Sgt. Joel Ware of the local Sheriff's Department describes Morrow as a well-loved member of society, attending church regularly and having medical problems.

"It's good to have him answer to justice, but to take an elderly person with medical issues, who has otherwise lived a quiet, peaceful life, never causing any problems, went to church every Sunday, it was bittersweet," Ware says.

Morrow has not resisted arrest and he has been detained and locked in Garland County Jail in Arkansas.

"He was super nice to us, very cooperative," Ware tells ABC News.

The prisoner will be extradited to California. He broke out of jail there during the fourth year of his sentence.

Morrow described fearing for his life after being threatened by other prisoners. He expected being caught and did not put up a fight.

"You've got me... I've been all around expecting this to happen," he said after being arrested.

"He was visibly upset but there was sense of relief as well. [...] Looking over your shoulders for the past 36 years and not having to do it anymore, there's got to be relief in that," Ware recalls.

California prisons spokeswoman Terry Thornton mentions that an update in prisoner listing in the jail system has led to the capture.

"Databases weren't as automated in 1984 as they are now," Thornton says.
