Ericsson Malaysia Sdn Bhn is aiming to help push the movbile TV service in Malaysia by introducing its latest solution that supports the mobile broadcasting of multimedia services later this year.

According to the president and country manager Krishna Kumar, the Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) system would be a software upgrade opportunity for existing High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network operators.

The HSPA mobile technology builds on the successful GSM business model. Through MBMS, end-users would be getting higher speed when downloading music from the Internet and be provided with a high quality picture when watching TV on their mobile phones, PCs or laptops.

"We will approach local operators and convince them to take up the service. Hopefully, MBMS will be available for them to implement by year-end so that they can offer it to the market early 2008," he told StarBiz in an interview during the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona.

According to Kumar, the MBMS system could also become a major source of revenue for mobile operators, as it would allow them to add content, such as adverts, to broadcasting materials.

Mobile advertising seems to be the next big thing and source of income for mobile operators, and by providing customers with an appealing service, when the service would increase in popularity and customer count, so would the mobile operator's income from advertising.

Although at first many operators were somewhat disinclined to include mobile ads in their services, now it looks like most of them have started to take the possibility into account. At the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Ericsson, the leading Swedish telecommunications equipment manufacturer, conducted the world's first live demonstration of mobile TV using MBMS.
