The controversial Man U former idol, Frenchman Eric Cantona, could not stay away from the World Cup and the media around it. And, if most of the coaches and former players are picking their favorites for conquering the World Cup trophy or winning the best footballer or top-scorer of the competition, why wouldn't Cantona do the same?!
After Cantona avoided to give us his pick for the new world champions, his thoughts towards the best footballer in the world seems more like an emotional choice - since it involves his former club, Manchester
United. And who else could it be than Wayne Rooney? Still, the youngster has to listen to Cantona in order for him to become the greatest footballer on the planet.
"Rooney is still young and you cannot expect everything from a man who is 20 compared to a player who is 25 or 26. Nevertheless, he has the qualities to become one of the best - and maybe even the best - player in the world. But to be one of the best you have to take the game seriously, very seriously. You have to eat sensibly, drink sensibly - I mean water! - train hard and go to bed early. These things are very important", said Cantona for Man U's magazine.
Although he was one of the best French players of his time - Jean Pierre Papin was the only one who had greater football skills that him - Eric Cantona never got the chance of playing at the World Cup. Still, he sees Wayne Rooney come a long way and becoming one of the few players to make a great impact on the sport. Hopefully, Old Trafford will have another great champion playing for Man U.
"Many young players are in the spotlight. All the girls like you and you are invited everywhere. You need to be strong enough to deal with that. You have to make sacrifices because talent is only a small percentage. A bit of luck is important but after that it's about mental strength", concluded Cantona, giving Rooney a true testament on how to become world's greatest footballer.
