Seiko Epson Corporation announced today that it has developed a new application processor - S1C33E07 - created for portable devices such as electronic dictionaries and e-books
that require high-level data processing and displays.

This new application processor offers a high level of functional integration demanded by electronic dictionaries and e-books combined with a longer battery life.

The latest Epson product offers a one-chip solution integrating functions necessary for electronic dictionaries and e-books such as a color LCD control circuit, USB 2.0 device connectivity, and interfaces for electronic media, SDRAM, and NAND flash memory.

The color LCD control circuit is compatible with both STN-type and TFT-type liquid crystal displays and, depending on the hardware, can accommodate accelerators in order to include features such as Picture in Picture, enabling users to achieve advanced image capabilities with a minimum of development work.

Power consumption during operation has been reduced by changing the frequency division ratio of the CPU clock and controlling clocks for each block of functions. In addition, Epson's low-leak technology minimizes power leakage in sleep mode.

Unfortunately, production, which is expected to be 1 million units per month, will start in September, as only samples will be shipped during July.

Today, Epson launched another advanced product - a high-resolution liquid-crystal display (LCD) featuring Photo Fine Vistarich wide viewing angle technology.

The LCD displays were made in five sizes in order to be used in several devices such as in-car navigation and entertainment systems, digital cameras and multi-functional mobile phones that are compatible with "One Seg", a new terrestrial digital broadcasting service in Japan enabling TV programs to be played on mobile phones.
