The game will be released on all platforms at once

The developers from Epic Games are working on the next installment of Unreal Tournament, which is going to support Linux right from the start. With this in mind, the makers of the game are now offering pre-Alpha builds that run natively on Linux.

The upcoming Unreal Tournament is being built on Unreal Engine 4, the latest iteration of the software developed by Epic Games. They said that Linux would be a supported platform and the community responded immediately. The newly released Linux builds show that the devs are serious about it and that they intend to really use all platforms.

Unreal Tournament will be a completely free game and it will use the same business model as Team Fortress 2. This means that all players will be equal and you won't be able to buy better stuff that will help you as a player. The money will come from customizations, like pants, hats, tattoos, you name it. All of the created content will be sold in an in-game store and Epic Games will made a percentage of each sale.

How to get the Linux builds running

"We're building a small prototype deathmatch alpha for testing design ideas and to provide a framework for further feature development. This framework is now in good enough shape that we are looking for more community developers to start working on core functionality and content needs or creating mods and providing feedback on that process."

"Many major features, such as support for competitive play and match spectating (UTV, etc.) are well suited to be community led efforts. We will participate in the design and architecture discussions for these features and support development as needed," say the devs.

According to gamingonlinux.com, it's not difficult to download these builds, but you will need to create a user name on the forum and then get the files from the same place. Some players have said that they had problems running it. A Reddit user explains that those problems can be circumvented by running this command in the LinuxNoEditor/Engine/Binaries/Linux folder:

code
./UE4 UnrealTournament
This is pretty much all you have to do, but please keep in mind that it's not even an Alpha build. There are a lot of bugs and the performance is all over the place. This is not really optimized and it's very likely that the new drivers for Linux will provide proper support for Unreal Tournament in the near future.
